Frequent checks, and that is normal
First-time drivers in Morocco are often surprised by how many checkpoints they meet. You will find them at the entrance and exit of many towns, at major junctions and along the main roads. In built-up areas the police usually carry out the checks; outside them, the Royal Gendarmerie. For a driver whose papers are in order, these stops are short and calm.
Fixed cameras and mobile checks
Fixed speed cameras stand along roads and motorways, and officers can also run mobile speed checks, sometimes just after a limit sign. The best strategy is also the simplest: stick to the posted speed at all times, especially when approaching villages where the limit drops sharply. Signs are generally written in Arabic and French, and limits read just as they do everywhere else.
How a stop works
- Slow down as soon as you see a "Stop" sign or officers at the roadside.
- Stop where you are shown, lower your window and keep your hands visible.
- Stay courteous: a greeting and a smile always help.
- Hand over the documents requested without rushing.
Which papers to keep handy
Keep your licence, your ID and the vehicle papers given by the rental company together in the glovebox or a document wallet. The exact documents required to rent depend on the rental company: check them when you book rather than relying on a generic list.
Driving your way
A car with character does not mean driving fast. A saloon such as the BMW 5 Series M Sport (from 1500 MAD/day) or the Mercedes CLA 220 (from 1000 MAD/day) drives smoothly thanks to its automatic gearbox, which helps you keep a steady pace and stay under the limits without effort. Mileage is unlimited across the fleet, and the minimum rental for both models is 3 days.
In short
Respect the speed limit, keep your papers in one place and stay composed: with these three habits, checks become a simple formality of the trip.
In an accident or any danger, the Moroccan emergency numbers are 19 (police in towns), 177 (Royal Gendarmerie, outside built-up areas) and 15 (civil protection: fire brigade and ambulances).
