Why prepare before you set off

Morocco is a wonderful country to explore by car: modern motorways between the major cities, spectacular mountain roads and tracks towards the desert. But driving here has its own habits, and travellers arriving from Europe benefit from knowing them before collecting their car in Casablanca. This guide covers the essentials, with no promises and no invented figures.

Speed limits

According to Morocco's National Road Safety Agency (NARSA), the maximum speed on motorways is 120 km/h. In built-up areas the limit is 60 km/h, and it can drop to 40 or 20 km/h depending on the situation. On national roads the limit is generally lower than on motorways. Always follow the road signs: they are what counts, and fixed and mobile speed cameras are common.

Road checkpoints

When entering and leaving towns you will often pass gendarmerie or police checkpoints. Slow down, stay courteous and keep the vehicle papers handed to you at pick-up, as well as your own documents, within reach. To know exactly which documents are required for the rental, ask the team directly when you book.

Roundabouts and city traffic

Casablanca, Rabat and Marrakech have heavy traffic, with scooters, taxis stopping without warning and pedestrians crossing away from crossings. Anticipate, keep your distance and check your mirrors constantly. At roundabouts, watch the signs and the behaviour of other road users carefully: local practice can be surprising at first.

On the road: a few reflexes

  • Only overtake with perfect visibility, especially on two-lane roads.
  • Watch out for animals, carts and pedestrians in rural areas.
  • Avoid driving at night on small, poorly lit roads.
  • Fill up before long crossings of sparsely populated regions.

Choosing the right car

All our cars have automatic transmission and unlimited mileage, which makes driving easier both in town and on long journeys. For country roads, an SUV such as the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, from 1300 MAD/day, offers a high and comfortable driving position. For a business stay in Casablanca, the Mercedes CLA 220 is available from 1000 MAD/day. The minimum rental period is 3 days for both models.

Collecting the car

Several models can be collected at the Casablanca agency (Maarif) or at the airports of Casablanca Mohammed V, Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir, Fès, Tanger, Nador and Oujda, with return during the agency's opening hours. Each car page lists the available options.
