Your phone, the best co-pilot

For most travellers, a phone is enough to guide a Moroccan road trip. Mainstream navigation apps cover cities and main roads well, estimate journey times and often flag slowdowns. A dashboard mount and a charging cable make all the difference: handling a phone while driving is both dangerous and prohibited.

Plan for areas without signal

Between the Atlas valleys, on the road to Ouarzazate or towards the desert, mobile coverage can become patchy. Before setting off, download offline maps of the whole region you will cross, not just your destination. Save your accommodation address as a favourite too: if the network drops, guidance carries on.

Navigation pitfalls

  • Medinas: most old-town alleys are not made for cars. Aim for a car park outside the walls and finish on foot.
  • Shortcuts: an app may suggest a track or narrow road because it looks shorter. In a low car, stay on the main paved roads.
  • Place names: the same town can be spelled several ways in Latin letters. If a search fails, try another spelling.

Estimate journey times carefully

In the mountains, bends, village crossings and roadworks stretch journeys: add a margin to app estimates. It is better to arrive in daylight in an unfamiliar region, especially if the last part is on a small road.

Pick a car that suits the route

For long drives south, a comfortable SUV brings peace of mind. The Maserati Levante (from 1500 MAD/day for 30 days or more) and the Audi Q8 (from 2100 MAD/day) have automatic gearboxes, and our whole fleet comes with unlimited mileage, leaving you free for an unplanned detour. These models can be collected at the Casablanca agency or at several airports, including Marrakech, Agadir and Fès, for a minimum of 3 days.

Keep a plan B

A paper map in the glovebox and a few words to ask the way come in handy the day your battery runs low. Moroccans gladly point the way to anyone who asks politely.
