Ifrane, another side of Morocco

At around 1,650 metres above sea level, Ifrane surprises everyone who sees it for the first time. Its steep-roofed houses, neat gardens and quiet streets have earned it the nickname of Morocco's “little Switzerland”. The town is home to Al Akhawayn University and is the gateway to one of the country's finest natural regions: the cedar forests of the Middle Atlas.

In winter snow falls regularly and the nearby Michlifen resort draws winter-sports fans. In spring and summer, the cool air makes it a favourite refuge when the heat settles over the plains.

Cedars and Barbary macaques

Between Ifrane and Azrou stretch vast forests of Atlas cedar, the region's emblematic tree. Several roadside stops let you watch Barbary macaques living wild in these forests. You are advised not to feed them. Forest roads, mountain lakes and viewpoints over the plateaus turn each day into a small expedition.

Getting there from Fès

Ifrane is about 65 km from Fès, a little over an hour's drive. Fès-Saïss airport is one of the pick-up locations for a large part of our fleet, which makes it the ideal starting point. The road climbs gradually through fields and then wooded hills. If you arrive through another airport, Rabat and Casablanca Mohammed V are also pick-up locations, with a longer drive.

Which car for the mountains

Winding roads, climbs and changing weather: a comfortable SUV is the obvious choice.

  • Audi Q8 (2025, diesel): 2100 MAD/day, a large and roomy SUV for families.
  • Maserati Grecale (2025, petrol): 1800 MAD/day.
  • Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (2025, diesel): from 1300 MAD/day.

All cars are automatic with unlimited mileage. The minimum rental is 3 days and the deposit is 30000 MAD. A driver can be offered on request, subject to availability.

Driving in winter

Between December and February, snow and ice can make some roads tricky or close them temporarily. Check the weather before setting off, slow down on shaded bends and leave early to be back before dark. In spring and autumn conditions are usually easier and the scenery is at its best.
