An easy escape from Casablanca

If you rent a car in Casablanca, El Jadida and Oualidia are among the easiest escapes to organise. El Jadida lies about 100 km south of Casablanca and is reached by motorway. Oualidia is about 75 km further south along the coast road. In two or three days you can combine heritage, the ocean and seafood.

El Jadida and the Portuguese City of Mazagan

In the 16th century the Portuguese built a stronghold here, Mazagan. The Portuguese City, surrounded by ramparts and bastions, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its jewel is the Portuguese cistern: a vaulted underground hall supported by columns, where a thin layer of water reflects the light falling from a central opening. The mirror effect is striking and has attracted filmmakers, including Orson Welles for his Othello. Save time for a walk along the ramparts facing the ocean.

Oualidia and its lagoon

Further south, Oualidia is a quiet village set around a lagoon sheltered from the ocean by a rocky barrier. The water is calm, which makes it pleasant for swimming, kayaking or a boat trip. Oualidia is also known for its oysters, served in the small restaurants along the lagoon. The coast road between the two towns runs past fields and dunes, with regular views of the Atlantic.

At weekends and in summer, El Jadida and Oualidia draw many visitors from Casablanca, so travelling midweek makes for a calmer stay. Inside the Portuguese City the lanes are narrow; park outside the ramparts. In Oualidia, check the tides before heading out on the lagoon.
