Morocco under snow

It is often forgotten: Morocco has high mountains, and winter there is very real. Ifrane, in the Middle Atlas, sometimes nicknamed Morocco's 'little Switzerland', can be covered in snow, as can the surrounding cedar forests and the Michlifen area. In the High Atlas, the mountain pass roads linking Marrakech to the south, such as the Tizi n'Tichka, cross grand but demanding landscapes. A winter road trip in the Atlas is a magnificent experience, provided you prepare it seriously.

Before you set off

Mountain weather changes fast. Check the forecast and road conditions before each stage, and ask locally: some pass roads may be temporarily closed or slowed after heavy snowfall while they are cleared. Always build some slack into your plans, and do not hesitate to postpone a drive by a day rather than force your way through.

Driving on snowy or icy roads

  • Reduce your speed significantly and increase your following distance.
  • Avoid sudden braking and steering; anticipate every bend.
  • Beware of shaded areas and bridges, where ice lingers.
  • Drive in daylight: at night the cold intensifies and visibility drops.
  • Keep the tank well filled, and carry water, warm clothes and a charged phone.

On mountain passes

Mountain roads are winding, sometimes narrow, and shared with lorries, buses and herds. On long descents, use engine braking rather than riding the brakes. Only overtake with perfect visibility, and stop only in safe places to enjoy the view.

Which car for the Atlas

In the mountains, an SUV offers a high driving position and comfort on long stages. The diesel Land Rover Range Rover Sport Autobiography is available from 2500 MAD/day (base rate 2800 MAD/day, 2500 MAD/day from 10 days), collected in Casablanca, 24/7. The Audi Q8, also diesel, is available at 2100 MAD/day. For a tighter budget, the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque starts from 1300 MAD/day. All our cars have automatic transmission and unlimited mileage, with a minimum rental of 3 days for these models. To find out whether winter equipment can be arranged, ask when you book.

Collection near the Atlas

The Audi Q8 and the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque can be collected at Fès airport, convenient for Ifrane and the Middle Atlas, or at Marrakech airport, gateway to the High Atlas, as well as at the Casablanca agency (Maarif) and the other airports offered, with return during the agency's opening hours.
