One country, several climates
Morocco combines an Atlantic coastline, mountain ranges and the gateway to the Sahara in a single territory. Choosing the season of your road trip therefore means choosing your itinerary. A drive from Casablanca to the dunes of Merzouga is not planned the same way in midsummer as in spring.
Spring: the best season
Spring is often considered the best time to travel around the country. Temperatures are mild on the coast and inland, the valleys turn green and the desert remains bearable during the day. It is the ideal moment for a long route linking the imperial cities, the mountains and the dunes of Erg Chebbi.
Autumn: the other ideal season
Autumn offers similar conditions: the summer heat eases, the light is beautiful and the roads are quieter than in high season. For a road trip south, towards Ouarzazate, the Draa Valley or Merzouga, it is an excellent window.
Summer: favour the coast
In summer, the heat can be intense inland and in the desert. It is better to focus on the Atlantic coast and the north, set off early in the morning and plan shorter stages. The air conditioning of a recent SUV and an automatic gearbox make these drives far more comfortable.
Winter: clear skies and cold nights
Winter often brings bright skies and pleasant days in the south, but nights can be cold, especially in the desert and at altitude. Mountain passes may see snow, so check road conditions before you leave.
Which car for which season?
For long distances and southern roads, a spacious SUV makes all the difference:
- Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2025, diesel): from 2000 MAD/day (3000 MAD/day base rate, 2300 MAD/day from 7 days, 2000 MAD/day from 15 days).
- Porsche Macan (2026, petrol): from 1400 MAD/day (2000 MAD/day base rate, 1800 MAD/day from 7 days, 1500 MAD/day from 15 days, 1400 MAD/day from 30 days).
- Audi Q8 (2025, diesel): 2100 MAD/day.
All our cars are automatic with unlimited mileage and a minimum rental of 3 days. Several models can be collected in Casablanca (Maarif) or at the airports of Casablanca Mohammed V, Rabat, Marrakech, Agadir, Fès, Tangier, Nador and Oujda, which is handy if you want to start your trip in Marrakech or Fès, closer to the desert.
Our advice before you set off
Whatever the season, leave early for long stages, carry water and avoid driving at night on unfamiliar mountain roads. An itinerary of ten days or more also lets you benefit from the lower long-rental rates.
