A month apart
Ramadan is the month of fasting for Muslims: from dawn to sunset, people neither eat nor drink. In Morocco, it sets the rhythm of the whole country. Its dates change every year because it follows the lunar calendar, so check them before you book. Travelling at this time is not complicated, and it is even a rare chance to see Moroccan hospitality in a different light.
The rhythm of the day
During Ramadan, days are organised around the breaking of the fast, the ftour, at sunset. Opening hours of many shops, offices and restaurants may change. In cities, many cafés and restaurants close during the day, while tourist establishments and hotels often keep serving their guests. In the evening, however, the streets come alive and medinas such as Fès take on a special atmosphere.
On the road: good habits
Late afternoon, just before ftour, is often the busiest time as everyone wants to get home on time. Be patient, keep your distance and, if possible, avoid planning a long drive at that hour. At the moment the fast is broken, by contrast, the roads become almost empty.
- Set off in the morning for long stages.
- Take water and snacks, especially outside the big cities.
- Fill up in advance if you drive late in the day.
- Stay calm and courteous: fasting fatigue can sometimes show on the road.
Travelling respectfully
Non-Muslim travellers are not expected to fast. It is, however, appreciated if you avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in public during the day. Modest clothing and a little discretion are always welcome. If you are invited to share ftour, accept with pleasure: it is a very warm moment.
