Some travellers come home from Morocco with memories; others come home with a set of images worthy of a car magazine. The country is perfect for it: within a few days on the road, the scenery shifts from ocean to summits, then from palm groves to Saharan sand. Here is our selection of backdrops reachable on paved roads, designed for a premium rental car.
Choosing the right car for the shot
A light-coloured body catches low-angle light and stands out against the ochre and red tones of the South. The Porsche Macan (from 1400 MAD/day depending on duration), the Maserati Levante (from 1500 MAD/day) or the white Land Rover Range Rover Sport (from 2000 MAD/day) have lines made for three-quarter shots. All our cars are automatic, with unlimited mileage and a minimum rental of 3 days: ideal for a tour without counting kilometres.
The Tichka pass and the Atlas road
Between Marrakech and Ouarzazate, the national road crosses the High Atlas via the Tizi n'Tichka pass, at over 2,000 metres. The hairpins offer spectacular viewpoints. Stop only in lay-bys and on wide verges, never on a bend, and shoot the car from a low angle with the ridges behind it.
Aït Benhaddou and the Dadès valley
The ksar of Aït Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provides an earthen backdrop unlike anywhere else. Further east, the Dadès gorges road winds through tight bends: seen from the designated viewpoints, it forms one of the country's most famous road images.
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi
The asphalt road to Merzouga runs alongside the great dunes of Erg Chebbi. The car stays on the tarmac or in car parks: it is from the road that the golden sand at sunset makes its finest backdrop. Our vehicles are meant for roads, not for tracks or dunes.
Chefchaouen, Essaouira and ocean light
In the north, the blue walls of Chefchaouen are best photographed on foot, with the car parked at the edge of the medina. On the Atlantic, the ramparts of Essaouira and the waves make a softer setting, perfect late in the day.
A few golden rules
- Favour golden hour, just after sunrise and before sunset.
- Always park safely, with hazard lights on if needed.
- Drone use is strictly regulated in Morocco: check before you travel.
- Ask permission before photographing people.
