Marrakech, Fès and Chefchaouen draw most visitors. Yet a few hours' drive away, Morocco hides towns and landscapes where you can travel in peace. Taroudant, Marrakech's little sister

About 85 km east of Agadir, in the Souss valley, Taroudant is surrounded by rammed-earth ramparts among the best preserved in the country. Its souks are authentic and quiet. Drive around the walls, then stroll the medina on foot. An ideal stay if you collect your car at Agadir airport.

Tafraoute and the Ammeln valley

In the heart of the Anti-Atlas, about 165 km from Agadir, Tafraoute is ringed by pink granite boulders and villages clinging to the mountain. The road there crosses superb mineral landscapes, with bends that call for smooth driving: an SUV such as the Porsche Macan (from 1400 MAD/day depending on duration) is a pleasure here.

Oualidia, the Atlantic lagoon

Moulay Idriss Zerhoun

Around thirty kilometres from Meknès, this holy town spreads over two hills facing the Roman site of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Both can be combined in a day from Fès or Meknès. Please respect the sacred character of the town.

Asilah, the white medina of the North

About 45 km south of Tangier, Asilah charms with its ramparts facing the ocean and its mural-covered walls. It is a gentle stop on the road between Tangier and Rabat, both cities where you can collect a car at the airport.
