Al Boraq, Africa's first high-speed train

Launched by ONCF in November 2018, Al Boraq is the first high-speed rail line on the African continent. It runs at up to 320 km/h on the high-speed section and links Tangier and Casablanca in 2 h 10, compared with about five hours previously by conventional train. It also serves Kenitra and Rabat. For a business round trip between city centres, it is a fast and comfortable solution, and it would be dishonest to claim otherwise. The car: another way to make the journey

By road, Tangier and Casablanca are about 340 km apart by motorway, a noticeably longer trip than on Al Boraq. The car does not win on pure speed. It wins elsewhere:

  • Freedom of route: Asilah, Larache or a detour via Chefchaouen become possible.
  • Door to door: no connection between the station and your final destination.
  • Luggage and groups: five seats and a large boot, with no timetable.
  • The rest of the trip: once in Casablanca, Marrakech is about 240 km away.

How to choose

If you are making a day trip between two stations, for a meeting for example, Al Boraq is hard to beat. If your trip is a tour, if you are travelling as a family with luggage, or if you want to discover the north of the country on the way, the car has the edge. Many travellers combine both: the train for one leg, the car to explore.
