Why start in Tangier

Tangier is the natural gateway to northern Morocco. Facing both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic across the Strait of Gibraltar, the city blends a lively medina, a modern seafront and famous viewpoints such as Cape Spartel. If you plan to continue to Tetouan and Chefchaouen, having your own car from the moment you land makes all the difference: you travel at your own pace, stop wherever you like and keep your luggage with you.

Tetouan, the white city

Tetouan lies about 60 km from Tangier. Its medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is one of the best preserved in the country, with white alleys and an Andalusian heritage. The nearby coast, from Martil to M'diq, offers fine beaches in summer. An SUV such as the Porsche Macan or the Audi Q8 makes the drive as comfortable as it is enjoyable.

Chefchaouen, the blue pearl of the Rif

From Tetouan, the road climbs into the Rif mountains and reaches Chefchaouen, about 60 km away. The town is known worldwide for its blue-painted houses. The road is winding in places: take your time, enjoy the scenery and plan to park at the edge of the medina, which is best explored on foot.

A simple three-to-five-day itinerary

  • Day 1: arrive at Tangier airport, collect the car, explore the city.
  • Day 2: drive to Tetouan and the Mediterranean coast.
  • Day 3: head up to Chefchaouen and stay the night.
  • Following days: return to Tangier along the same route, or extend as you wish.
