Two ways to cross the strait

Between southern Spain and northern Morocco, the Strait of Gibraltar is only a few kilometres wide, and several ferry routes cross it every day. Many travellers board with their own vehicle. Others prefer a simpler plan: travel as a foot passenger with a suitcase and pick up a car once they land. This guide focuses on that second approach, because it removes a lot of hassle and lets you actually enjoy the crossing.

Why leave your car behind

Bringing a vehicle means booking a car slot, expecting queues at the port and handling the paperwork that comes with taking a car from one country to another. Those rules are set by ferry operators and customs authorities; they change over time, so please check them directly with those bodies if you choose that route. Travelling without a car gives you a more flexible ticket, a lighter arrival, and the chance to explore Morocco behind the wheel of a recent model built for long drives.

Arriving on the Moroccan side

The large Tanger Med port and Tangier's city port receive most passengers coming from Spain. Tangier makes an excellent gateway: it is linked to the rest of the country by motorway, with Rabat about 250 km away and Casablanca about 340 km away. From there, the Atlantic coast, the Rif and Chefchaouen, or Fes are all within easy reach.

Which car to collect in Tangier

Several models in our fleet can be collected at Tangier airport, as well as at our Casablanca agency (Maarif) and other airports across the Kingdom. All have an automatic gearbox and unlimited mileage:

  • Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2025): from 2000 MAD/day for rentals of 15 days or more (base rate 3000 MAD/day).
  • Maserati Levante (2026): from 1500 MAD/day for 30 days or more (base rate 2300 MAD/day).
  • Porsche Macan (2026): from 1400 MAD/day for 30 days or more (base rate 2000 MAD/day).
  • Audi Q8 (2025): 2100 MAD/day.
  • Maserati Grecale (2025): 1800 MAD/day.
  • Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (2025): 1300 MAD/day.
  • Mercedes CLA 220 (2025): 1000 MAD/day.

The minimum rental period for these models is 3 days and the deposit is 30000 MAD. Cars are returned during the agency's opening hours.

Planning your return

If you are sailing back to Spain, plan to hand the car back well before boarding time. You can also end your trip elsewhere, for example in Casablanca or Marrakech, and fly home: just tell us your preferred pickup point when you book, and we will confirm what is possible for the model you choose.

A few practical tips

Book the car before you take the ferry, especially in high season when demand in the north is strong. Keep your travel documents close at hand for checks at the port. And give yourself a first evening in Tangier before hitting the road: the medina and the seafront are well worth it.
