A capital best enjoyed without hurrying

Rabat is Morocco's administrative capital and one of its most relaxed cities. Its tree-lined avenues, Atlantic seafront and the mouth of the Bouregreg river make it an ideal stop for anyone who enjoys driving in comfort. Since 2012, part of the city has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name "Rabat, Modern Capital and Historic City: a Shared Heritage". A luxury car lets you link in minutes sites that would take hours to string together on foot.

The Kasbah of the Udayas

Perched above the mouth of the Bouregreg, the Kasbah of the Udayas is Rabat's historic heart. You enter through a monumental Almohad gate, then wander through white and blue lanes to the terrace overlooking the ocean. The Andalusian garden below offers a shaded break. Park nearby and plan to visit on foot: the lanes are not made for driving.

Hassan Tower and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V

A few minutes' drive away, Hassan Tower is the unfinished minaret of a vast mosque commissioned by the Almohad sultan Yacoub al-Mansour at the end of the 12th century. Dozens of columns still stand around it on an esplanade facing the river. Opposite stands the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, resting place of King Mohammed V and his sons, King Hassan II and Prince Moulay Abdallah, guarded by horsemen in ceremonial dress. Respectful clothing is expected.

Chellah, the medina and the corniche

The Chellah site, an ancient city that later became a Marinid necropolis, blends ruins, gardens and storks. Rabat's medina, smaller than those of Fez or Marrakech, is easy to explore. At the end of the day, the corniche runs along the Atlantic: the moment to drive with the windows down before crossing the bridge to Salé to see the capital from the other bank.
