Hitting the road solo

More and more women travellers choose to discover Morocco by road, at their own pace, without depending on a group or bus timetables. A car brings real freedom: stopping at a viewpoint, changing plans at the last minute, staying an extra night in a town you love. With a little preparation, a solo road trip can be a relaxed experience.

Planning your route

For a first trip, stick to the main roads. The motorway network links Tangier, Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir and Fes, among others, and fuel stations are regular along it. The Atlantic coast, with Essaouira, El Jadida or Asilah, is particularly well suited to solo exploring. Share your route and stops with someone close to you, and check in at regular intervals.

Drive in daylight

Plan each leg so you arrive before dark, especially on secondary and mountain roads, where lighting is scarce and you may come across animals or pedestrians. Shorter legs also leave time to wander.

Accommodation and parking

Choose places to stay that have parking or a guarded car park nearby, and check this before booking. In medina towns such as Essaouira or Fes, the car stays outside the walls, so find out in advance where to park. Never leave valuables visible inside the car.

Day to day

Clothing that covers shoulders and knees helps you blend in more in traditional neighbourhoods and the countryside. If someone offers unrequested help with parking or directions, a polite, confident no is usually enough. Keep your phone charged, with a car charger, and download offline maps before heading into areas with weaker coverage.

Choosing a reassuring car

A recent, reliable car makes a real difference when you travel alone. Every car in our fleet has an automatic gearbox and unlimited mileage, and several models can be collected directly at the airports of Marrakech, Agadir, Fes, Rabat, Tangier, Casablanca Mohammed V, Nador or Oujda:

  • Mercedes CLA 220 (2025): 1000 MAD/day, a nimble and comfortable sedan.
  • Land Rover Range Rover Evoque (2025): 1300 MAD/day, a compact SUV with a high driving position.
  • Porsche Macan (2026): from 1400 MAD/day for rentals of 30 days or more (base rate 2000 MAD/day).
  • Maserati Grecale (2025): 1800 MAD/day.

These models are rented for a minimum of 3 days, with a deposit of 30000 MAD. A driver can also be offered on request, subject to availability, if you would rather not drive part of the way.

Making the most of it

A solo road trip is also a chance to meet people: on a café terrace in Essaouira, at an argan oil cooperative in the region, or while wandering a souk. Take your time: Morocco is best enjoyed slowly.
