A day at the foot of the Middle Atlas

About 150 km north-east of Marrakech, in the province of Azilal, the Ouzoud waterfalls are among the best-known falls in Morocco. The water drops in several tiers into a green gorge lined with olive trees, and the site is famous for the Barbary macaques living in the surrounding trees. It is a classic day trip, and exactly the kind of outing where your own car changes everything: no group timetable, no waiting, and the freedom to stay by the water as long as you like.

The drive from Marrakech

Allow roughly three hours each way, depending on traffic and stops. You leave the Haouz plain and gradually climb into the first hills, past villages and fields, with views widening as you go. The last stretch is more winding, and a comfortable automatic SUV makes those bends far more relaxing. Leave early: you will arrive before the crowds and enjoy the soft light over the gorge.

At the falls

A path leads down to the bottom of the falls, where you can face the cascade and sometimes catch rainbows in the spray. Bring good shoes, water and a layer if you get close to the mist. Respect the monkeys: do not feed them and keep your bags closed. Small places along the path serve lunch with a view of the water.

Practical tips
