Following the Atlantic from Tangier

Tangier faces both the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. Heading south along the ocean, two towns invite a stop: Asilah, about 45 km away, and Larache, about 90 km away. The motorway linking Tangier to Rabat makes the trip quick, while the slower coastal road offers fine ocean views. It is a perfect getaway for a day, or for two unhurried days.

Asilah, the white medina

Asilah is known for its small medina of whitewashed houses, colourful doors and ramparts overlooking the ocean. Every year artists paint murals on its walls, giving the old town a unique character. You explore on foot, climb the ramparts at sunset and sit down for fresh fish near the harbour. Park outside the medina, whose lanes are pedestrian.

Larache and the ruins of Lixus

Further south, Larache lies at the mouth of the Loukkos river. The town keeps a Spanish imprint visible in its squares and facades, and its seafront opens onto the Atlantic. Just before you arrive, on a hill above the estuary, the archaeological site of Lixus holds the remains of an ancient city. A visit that combines easily with discovering the town.

A simple itinerary

  • Leave Tangier in the morning, by motorway or coastal road.
  • Stop in Asilah: medina, ramparts, fish lunch.
  • Drive to Lixus and then Larache in the afternoon.
  • Return to Tangier in the evening, or stay the night.

Tips

In summer Asilah and Larache are busy: leave early to park easily. The Atlantic wind can cool the evenings, so bring a jacket. The car is returned during the agency's opening hours.
